Junran (Steve) Wang

B.S. Electrical Engineering, Harvey Mudd College — Expected May 2028

I am a rising junior majoring in Electrical Engineering at Harvey Mudd College.

Before that, I received my IB Bilingual Diploma from United World College Changshu China, where I led our robotics team (FRC 7280, VEX 72800X) during the 2023–2024 season.

Focus

Research Interests

I'm broadly interested in embedded systems and autonomous vehicles — sensor fusion, PID control, and onboard avionics — with a particular focus on FPV drone navigation. I also have some research background in electrocatalysis for fuel cells, from earlier work on single-atom catalysts.

Experience

Projects & Experience

Autonomous Surface Vehicle

Experimental Engineering Coursework, Harvey Mudd College (Spring 2025)

Engineered a fully autonomous surface vehicle for water quality mapping in kelp forest zones, with IMU+GPS sensor fusion, PID control, and onboard data acquisition with DSP.

AeroLab — Avionics Engineer

Prof. David Harris's Lab, HMC (Sep 2024 – Present)

Designing avionics subsystems for an experimental aircraft build (Van's RV-12iS ELSA), writing embedded C/C++ firmware for flight data acquisition over SPI/I2C/UART.

FRC Team MITO 7280

Team Lead & Electronics Captain (2020 – 2023)

Led a 30+ member robotics team to a Regional Winner at 2023 China Playoff. Designed electrical systems with CAN bus, programmed in Java/C++ with PID control loops.

Drone Club

Founder, Autonomous Navigation Group, HMC (Sep 2024 – Present)

Leading autonomous quadrotor navigation development using LiDAR, IMU, and optical flow. Regional FPV drone racing champion.

Single-Atom Electrocatalyst ORR Research

Summer Intern, Wenzhou University (Summers 2022–2023)

Investigated Co/N-doped carbon single-atom electrocatalysts derived from Prussian blue precursors for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in fuel cells. Synthesized a polydopamine-coated catalyst achieving 0.834 V vs. RHE half-wave potential, with DFT-based theoretical verification.
